Britain’s Fat Fight with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

Big Animal Surgery (w/t)

This new and ambitious veterinary science series, presented by Liz Bonnin (Big Blue Live; Drowning In Plastic), takes you into the dramatic - and often dangerous - world of big animal surgery. Filmed around the world, from the mountains of Uganda to the rainforest of Sierra Leone, Liz takes us to the heart of the action, as the planet’s most iconic animals undergo life-or-death operations.

From the jaws of a lion to the heart of a chimpanzee, every surgery is experimental - and risky. We capture the drama in real time as some of the most skilled vets in the world work against the clock, often able to discover exactly what the problem is only when their extraordinary animal patient arrives in the operating theatre.

Every operation offers a unique insight into the wonders of natural engineering hidden inside big animal bodies, helping to uncover how nature’s greatest beasts survive and thrive.

From old-hand to new recruits working together, the three practices cover the whole Mourne Mountain area, responding to over 100 clinic cases and call outs a day.

From a rare five-legged calf to emergency surgery on a horse, overweight cats and rescued seals, the doors are constantly revolving with an array of unusual and unexpected cases for the vets to treat.
