主播大秀

Diverse musical offerings

In addition to core classical repertoire, the 主播大秀 Proms has developed a range of other musical events in recent years.

Following the success of the Doctor Who Proms (2009 & 2010) and the mad monarchs of last summer’s Horrible Histories Prom, this year launches the audience into the wonderful world of Wallace & Gromit. With the help of violinist Tasmin Little and conductor Nicholas Collon, our animated friends find themselves catapulted into the middle of a concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Nick Park and Aardman Animations have created some specially devised animation for the first half of the concert, which will be followed by a screening of A Matter of Loaf and Death, with the score performed live by the Aurora Orchestra (29 July).

Desert Island Discs

A Proms first, the 主播大秀 Concert Orchestra and its Principal Conductor, Keith Lockhart, explore the rich musical legacy of 主播大秀 Radio 4’s iconic programme, Desert Island Discs. Presented live from the stage by Kirsty Young, the Prom showcases a selection of repertoire requested by Desert Island castaways since the programme was first aired 70 years ago (3 September).

John Wilson

John Wilson returns for his fourth consecutive season, this year with two Proms. Alongside his hand-picked John Wilson Orchestra, he presents his first recreation of a complete musical at the Proms, the Broadway classic My Fair Lady. The semi-staged production uses André Previn’s Academy Award-winning orchestrations from the 1964 film, topped off by a star-studded cast, led by Anthony Andrews and Annalene Beechey (14 July).

John Wilson and his John Wilson Orchestra return later in the season for The Broadway Sound, a gala celebration of the Broadway musical (27 August). Presenting a timeless sweep from the earliest triumphs of the genre in the 1920s, through the Great Depression of the 1930s and into the Golden Age of the 1950s and 1960s, with excerpts from classics including West Side Story, Hello, Dolly! and The King and I, the gala showcases tunes from some of the greatest Broadway composers, including George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.

Ivor Novello

For the first time since 1914 the work of Ivor Novello will be heard at the Proms, as the Hallé under Sir Mark Elder, a passionate advocate of Novello’s work, celebrates one of the UK’s most successful composers of musical theatre. With British theatrical legend Simon Callow acting as Master of Ceremonies, this Late Night Prom features singers Sophie Bevan and Toby Spence performing such familiar numbers as We’ll gather lilacs and Keep the home fires burning (9 August).

Kronos Quartet

The sensational Kronos Quartet makes its Proms debut with a Late Night concert showcasing the boundary-breaking style for which the adventurous ensemble is renowned.

For almost 40 years the Kronos Quartet has been reinventing the quartet genre, and its Proms debut showcases a typically diverse programme featuring the UK premiere of Omar Souleyman’s I’ll Prevent the Hunters from Hunting You and works written specially for the quartet, including Aleksandra Vrebalov’s … hold me, neighbor, in this storm … .

The concert also features a 主播大秀 commission from Nicole Lizée, The Golden Age of the Radiophonic Workshop (Fibre-Optic Flowers), inspired by the work of Delia Derbyshire of the 主播大秀 Radiophonic Workshop (24 July).

Late Night Jazz

As part of the season’s focus on youth, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra conducted by Mark Armstrong presents a Late Night big-band set showcasing its range of work, from jazz standards to new writing. Standards by Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and others are accompanied by a 主播大秀 commission from saxophonist-composer Tim Garland, who also joins the NYJO on stage (10 August).

Jazz aficionados then have a second Late Night treat when guitarist Martin Taylor is soloist in the London premiere of his collaboration with Guy Barker The Spirit of Django (31 August). The orchestral suite, in which the composer conducts his Jazz Orchestra, big band and jazz group, is a tribute to the Belgian Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt.

Staff Benda Bilili and Baloji

Congolese street musicians Staff Benda Bilili make their Proms debut, joined by Baloji, the Congolese-Belgian ‘sorcerer of words’, in a Late Night Prom that promises to be a creative melting pot set to the beat of the rumba (6 September).

Bank Holiday Monday

A major event for families is the Family Matinee on August Bank Holiday Monday. The specially formed Proms Family Orchestra & Chorus joins the Northern Sinfonia and Afro-blues duo Amadou & Mariam for a concert of diverse musical styles from around the world, from 2012 featured composer Frederick Delius to African music. The young Montenegrin guitarist Miloš Karadaglic joins the afternoon concert which offers something for everyone (27 August).

Radio 3 World Routes Academy

Now in its third year, the 主播大秀 Radio 3 World Routes Academy aims to support and inspire young world music artists by bringing them together with an internationally renowned artist belonging to the same tradition. This year the World Routes Academy moves to Colombia and focuses on the folk style of vallenato, popular across the country’s Caribbean coast.

The current apprentice is 20-year-old London-based accordion player José Hernando Arias Noguera, who is paired with world-renowned Colombian accordionist Egidio Cuadrado. Their Late Night Prom gives audiences the chance to hear the results of the ongoing collaboration between the two artists and to enjoy the unique power of this lively, energetic style of music (31 July).
