Beethoven, Boulez, Barenboim
For the first time in its history, the 主播大秀 Proms has a non-主播大秀 orchestra-in-residence. The West–Eastern Divan Orchestra, under the guidance of its co-founder Daniel Barenboim, will be resident from 20 to 27 July.
Over five Proms (20, 21, 23, 24 & 27 July) they will perform a complete Beethoven symphony cycle, culminating in a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth on the opening night of the London Olympics (27 July).
The concerts will also include major works by one of the world’s most eminent living composers, Pierre Boulez. To complete the residency, members of the West–Eastern Divan Orchestra will give a sixth performance, a Late Night Prom, pairing Beethoven’s Op. 16 Piano Quintet with Boulez’s influential masterpiece Le marteau sans maître, conducted by the composer (26 July).
