Earth's Sacred Wonders

A remarkable new series for 主播大秀 One, Earth’s Sacred Wonders travels the world to discover spectacular religious wonders and the extraordinary endeavours and rituals people perform for their faith.

From Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, to Masada, site of one of the oldest synagogues on earth; and from the Sikh’s unique Golden Temple in India to one of the world’s largest cathedrals in America, the series uncovers the astonishing physical challenges and deeds of devotion undertaken by believers at some of the most extraordinary sacred places in the world.

Earth’s Sacred Wonders (3x60’) is a 主播大秀 Studios Production for PBS and 主播大秀. Exec producer is Jane Aldous and the series producer is Matt Barratt. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of Content, and Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning Natural History and Specialist Factual. The 主播大秀 Commissioning Editor is Jack Bootle.

The series is a co-production with PBS in America.

Surrogacy with Tom Daley (w/t)

With the recent arrival of his baby son, 主播大秀 One has commissioned a single film, Surrogacy with Tom Daley (w/t).

When Tom announced he was having a baby with his husband Dustin Lance Black, he became one of a growing number of parents who are having children through surrogacy. Tom is an 'expert through experience' and now, in this hour-long film, he's setting out to examine a modern phenomenon that he has a strong personal connection to.

Tom will explore how surrogacy works in the UK, where it’s illegal to advertise for or pay surrogates except for reasonable expenses. He’ll also travel to California, where commercial surrogacy, complete with contracts between surrogates and want-to-be parents, is much more the norm.

Tom wants to find out why some women are prepared to become surrogates. He wants to explore the extraordinary relationships that develop between those wanting to become parents and their surrogates and to understand why people oppose surrogacy and want to stop people like him and Lance having a child via a surrogate. And, with commercial surrogacy currently illegal in the UK, he’ll meet those who want to change the country’s laws.

Throughout his journey Tom will question whether the American or British system works best, and whether surrogacy in the UK needs updating in any way.

Welcome To The Bruderhof (w/t)

In a picturesque village on the outskirts of Hastings, life appears idyllic. There’s no unemployment, no debt and there has never been a reported crime. Even more surprisingly, not one person owns a car, a mobile phone or even their own clothes.

主播大秀 to over 300 committed Christians who live together as disciples of Jesus, this character-driven documentary explores their unique way of life as well as examining the future of a community at odds with mainstream society.

We follow 18 year-old Hannah, as she experiences life on the 'outside' and starts to consider whether to return to the community she’s been part of from birth, and take their vow of commitment for life - or leave it for good.

Too Gay For God?

Too Gay For God? explores the place of the LGBTIQ+ community within the Christian faith, and the Church of England in particular, through the perspective of Reverend Jide Macaulay, an openly gay member of the clergy.

As well as being an ordained Deacon in the Church of England, Jide has started his own inclusive religious community, the House of Rainbow. He wants the Church itself to adopt a more inclusive position towards the LGBTIQ+ community, with particular respect to the acceptance of same-sex marriages for members of the priesthood. In this film he is setting out to meet people who have views on, and personal experience of, the issue. He will seek to understand the position of leaders across various Christian denominations.

Jide’s position reflects that of countless individuals who are struggling to reconcile their sexuality, identity and faith. This film represents a vital opportunity to explore where those people - and the Church - go from here, through the perspective and experiences of someone who is both deeply committed to his faith and striving to be fully accepted by it.

Male Circumcision (w/t )

This new documentary explores the complex issues around male circumcision. Presenter and journalist Adnan Sarwar (pictured) takes a personal journey through this issue, dealing with the strong emotions generated by this divisive topic.

To explore the place of circumcision in the 21st century he meets Jewish and Muslim religious leaders, practitioners and campaigners to hear their wide range of views. He asks what the religious basis for circumcision is, whether this will become a new battleground between people of faith and the secular world, and whether, if he had a son in the future, he would have him circumcised.
