Inside The Vatican

Filmed over the course of a year, during the fifth anniversary of Pope Francis’s pontificate, Inside The Vatican delivers unprecedented access to one of the most important places in the Christian world. Nestled in the city of Rome, The Vatican is the headquarters of the Catholic Church and an independent city-state.

From the Pope himself to his head of security, the nuns who cater to the homeless, the choristers of the Sistine Chapel, the papal gardener, the chief of the diplomatic corps and many others, this two-part series captures the daily lives of those who live and work inside the Vatican.

The series has astonishing access - from the private apartments inside the Apostolic Palace; behind-the-scenes preparations to ready St Peter’s for the Easter celebrations; an interview with a prisoner who had his feet washed by the Pope, and the daily life of a young priest, who is also football star in the Vatican League. Inside The Vatican also gives a deeply human and revelatory insight into the work of Pope Francis (pictured) over the course of a critical year in the history of the Catholic Church and the inner workings of this independent city state.

Inside The Vatican (2x60’) is an Oxford Films production. The Executive Producers are Nicolas Kent and Sam Hobkinson. It was commissioned by Patrick Holland, Controller, 主播大秀 Two and Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual. The 主播大秀 Commissioning Editor for the 主播大秀 is Simon Young.

Surrogacy with Tom Daley (w/t)

Medical Ethics (w/t)

This one hour-long documentary for 主播大秀 Two looks at how complex medical and ethical decisions about patient treatment are made at Great Ormond Street Hospital. With unique access to their Clinical Ethics Committee, one of the most experienced medical ethics committees in the country, it explores how the hospital works with families and medical teams facing the most difficult choices.

Great Ormond Street Hospital is renowned for practising some of the most advanced paediatric medicine anywhere in the world, and many of the most life-changing decisions taken there are filtered through the hospital’s committee. The Clinical Ethics Committee is made up of world-leading clinicians, social workers and psychologists, who work alongside lay-members from many different walks of life - religious leaders, academics, lawyers, philosophers. They meet to listen to the issues, discuss the ethical and moral implications, and try to help medical teams resolve the seemingly impossible problems they’re facing to work out what’s the right thing to do for their patients.

The documentary follows the story of patients with serious, complex and rare conditions, and their families, as the medical teams treating them wrestle with what are some of the most complex and finely-balanced issues of modern medicine.

Medical Ethics (w/t) (1x60’) is 主播大秀 Studios productions. Peter Dale is the Executive Producer. It was commissioned by Patrick Holland, Controller, 主播大秀 Two, and Clare Sillery, Head of Commissioning, Documentaries. The 主播大秀 Commissioning Editor is Emma Loach.

Pilgrimage: The Road To Rome

With the recent arrival of his baby son, 主播大秀 One has commissioned a single film, Surrogacy with Tom Daley (w/t).

When Tom announced he was having a baby with his husband Dustin Lance Black, he became one of a growing number of parents who are having children through surrogacy. Tom is an 'expert through experience' and now, in this hour-long film, he's setting out to examine a modern phenomenon that he has a strong personal connection to.

Tom will explore how surrogacy works in the UK, where it’s illegal to advertise for or pay surrogates except for reasonable expenses. He’ll also travel to California, where commercial surrogacy, complete with contracts between surrogates and want-to-be parents, is much more the norm.

Tom wants to find out why some women are prepared to become surrogates. He wants to explore the extraordinary relationships that develop between those wanting to become parents and their surrogates and to understand why people oppose surrogacy and want to stop people like him and Lance having a child via a surrogate. And, with commercial surrogacy currently illegal in the UK, he’ll meet those who want to change the country’s laws.

Throughout his journey Tom will question whether the American or British system works best, and whether surrogacy in the UK needs updating in any way.

Surrogacy with Tom Daley (w/t) (1x60’) is a Raw Television production for 主播大秀 One. The Executive Producer is Tom Barry. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of Content, and Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual. Emeka Onono is the Commissioning Editor for the 主播大秀.

The Satanic Verses: 30 Years On

The publication of Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses in 1988 sparked a culture war in Britain between those in the Muslim community who considered the book blasphemous and called for the book to be banned, and those defending it as an expression of freedom of speech.

Protests, which began in the north of England, soon spread across the UK and to the rest of the Islamic world, culminating in February 1989 with Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issuing a fatwa - a death sentence on the writer.

Now, 30 years on, broadcaster and journalist Mobeen Azhar embarks on a journey, starting in his native Yorkshire where the protest first began, to examine the lasting effect the book has had on the Muslim community and how the events of 1989 continue to have an impact today.

Mobeen hears from a range of people who were affected by the so called 'Rushdie Affair' - from the men who took an early stand against the book and organised the original protests, to the writer who wrestled at the time of the book's publication with the complex questions of free speech and her own religious beliefs; and a former member of the National Front who claims that the furore over the book became a recruiting tool for them.

Divided Britain with Mehreen Baig (w/t)

Mehreen Baig (Muslims Like Us; Islam, Women & Me; Lost Boys? What’s Going Wrong For Asian Men) is embarking on a quest to understand the fault lines in our society, in Divided Britain With Mehreen Baig (working title).

At a time when our nation has never felt so polarised, Mehreen is crossing a divide that separates us like no other: the wealth gap. She's leaving friends, family and home comforts behind to move in with the very rich, and the very poor, in one of the most economically unequal boroughs in the country.

Mehreen will stay with a series of starkly different residents, from billionaires to those on the breadline. These are people who live cheek by jowl, but whose worlds are light years apart. As she lives side by side with them she’ll explore how views on money, community and morality differ between the haves and the have-nots in modern Britain. These people share the same streets, but do they share the same values? Are their priorities poles apart - or do they have more in common than we might think?

As income inequality rises and social mobility decreases, there’s never been a better time for Mehreen to explore the divide between rich and poor and to discover just what an ever-growing wealth gap is doing to our towns and neighbourhoods. By going to extremes, Mehreen will uncover what's really keeping us apart and ask what could bring us back together.

Divided Britain with Mehreen Baig (w/t) (1x60’) is from Label1. Simon Dickson and Lorraine Charker-Phillips are the Executive Producers. It was commissioned by Patrick Holland, Channel Editor, 主播大秀 Two, and Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual. The Commissioning Editor for the 主播大秀 is Jack Bootle.

Male Circumcision (w/t )

Pregnant And Platonic

Co-parenting is a radical and increasingly popular new way to start a family. It’s what happens when two people decide to have a baby together without being in a romantic relationship. Some co-parents meet through specialist websites designed to introduce them to strangers who also want a child; other co-parents are already friends who decide to embark on a life-changing adventure together.

Despite its increasing popularity, this type of co-parenting still provokes fierce debate and raises questions about whether this is a responsible way to bring children into the world. What does it mean for the children themselves? Do you need romance to raise a happy family - or is it more important to be committed to your kids?

Featuring those who are attempting to find a stranger or friend to co-parent with, as well as meeting people who’ve already started families through co-parenting, Pregnant And Platonic explores this growing social phenomenon and allows viewers to draw their conclusions on the issue.

Friends Alex and Miriam, both gay and desperate to be parents, have decided to have a child together. Desirée and Jamie were strangers who met through a co-parenting website and are now expecting a baby. Sachan has been told that if she wants a baby she needs to get pregnant before she’s 27 and, with just one year to go, she’s desperately seeking a co-parent. Richard is gay and has wanted a child for years - he’s now looking for a woman to start a family with. Stephen and Ellen are close friends and co-parents to twin girls Charlie and Lucy. Their extended family includes their own romantic partners, Jim and Jason, which means Christmas can get crowded.

Pregnant And Platonic (1x60’) is Finestripe production. The Executive Producer is Katie Lander. It was commissioned by Patrick Holland, Controller, 主播大秀 Two, and Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual. The 主播大秀 Commissioning Editor for the 主播大秀 is Jack Bootle.

Easter From King’s

This new documentary explores the complex issues around male circumcision. Presenter and journalist Adnan Sarwar (pictured) takes a personal journey through this issue, dealing with the strong emotions generated by this divisive topic.

In the programme he meets Jewish and Muslim religious leaders, practitioners and campaigners to hear their wide range of views. As the British Medical Association consults their members on their attitude to male circumcision, Adnan explores the place of circumcision in the 21st century. He asks what the religious basis for circumcision is, whether this will become a new battleground between people of faith and the secular world, and whether, if he had a son in the future, he would have him circumcised.

Male Circumcision (w/t) (1x40’) is made by Black Pepper Media and Matchlight Productions. The Executive Producer is Alan Clements. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of Content, and Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual. The Commissioning Editors for the 主播大秀 are Abigail Priddle and Emeka Onono.

Music and readings for Holy Week and Easter come from the magnificent Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge.

The world-famous choir, directed by Stephen Cleobury, sing some of the best-loved choral music for the season, including Crucifixus (Lotti), Were You There? (arr. Cleobury) and Hallelujah (Handel, from Messiah).

Mezzo soprano Jennifer Johnston joins the choir for a glorious performance of the Easter Hymn from Cavalleria Rusticana (Mascangi). The story of Jesus’s death and resurrection is taken from the Gospel of Matthew and is reflected upon in poems by Ruth Etchells and E.E. Cummings.

The Executive Producer is Hugh Faupel. Easter from Kings was commissioned by Patrick Holland, Controller, 主播大秀 Two and Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual.
