Tate Liverpool At 30

Ep. 1/1 -

Comedian, writer and former art student Alexei Sayle returns home to Liverpool to assess the impact Tate Liverpool has had on the city, as the gallery celebrates its 30th anniversary.

When it opened in 1988 Tate Liverpool was England's first gallery of modern art - but its origins were mired in the politics of the decade.

Based in the Albert Dock, it was part of the government's response to the Toxteth riots and was not universally welcomed.

Alexei Sayle meets Lord Heseltine, the politician who was made Minister For Liverpool to try to solve the city's problems in the 80s. Alexei also talks to the artist Sir Peter Blake, whose work has been shown several times in the gallery, and shares a stroll through the exhibits with Liverpool writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

And he meets curators, staff, and gallery visitors before making his own assessment of the Tate's 30 years in Liverpool.
