6 Music Celebrates The White Album with Martin Freeman

In celebration of National Album Day, award-winning actor and huge fan of The Beatles Martin Freeman presents this four-hour special on The Beatles’ revolutionary 1968 release The White Album. With enlightening, entertaining and surprising insights into the record, this celebration includes live performances and in-depth appreciation by fans, experts and critics.

With special guests to introduce and explain a sample of never-before-heard material from the album’s original fabled Esher sessions at George Harrison’s house, this will also be a live Listening Party for the whole original double album, with all the tracks played, enjoyed and discussed over an afternoon with the finest commentators and contributors.

With his knowledge and expertise, Martin will be digging deep into key tracks, breaking down their groundbreaking musical structure, composition and lyrics. He will also be hearing master tapes and going behind the scenes at Abbey Road, meeting both those who worked on the original album and on the new mixes for the release later this year. He will explore the turbulent times of 1968 - a period, reflected on the album, when peace and love started to evolve into something different.

Martin will investigate the influence of the album in the many covers and samples, from Dangermouse to Wu-Tang Clan. Guests and contributors will include producer Giles Martin - son of Beatles’ producer Sir George Martin, actor Bill Nighy, Gail Renard (a Canadian broadcaster who got to know John and Yoko at the Montreal bed-in), master musican and producer Nile Rodgers, journalist John Harris and actor John Simm. It will feature archive clips of John, Paul, George and Ringo, Sir George Martin, Chris Thomas and others recorded at the time.

This programme is part of Music’s support for the first ever National Album Day, which takes place on Saturday 13 October with programming on Radio 1, 1Xtra, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, 6 Music, One and Four across the week or on the day itself.
