in the Lake District is one of the best limestone habitats in Europe.
The
lower slopes of the hill are covered in woods - but the top is made up of layers
of limestone, resulting in some fantastic specialist plants and butterflies. | |  | Some moors are wild and remote places, but they are also
great for nature if you're prepared to look carefully. | |  | - Heathlands are good places for
wildlife watchers because they are ideal habitats for reptiles and rare plants.

- July and August are the best months for the fritillaries.
Plants - the
ferns are visible for most of the year. 听 The limestone pavement -
the largest examples can be found on the eastern side of the reserve. | | Access: | The
reserve has steep terrain steep and it can be slippery when wet. An easier approach
is possible from The Howe off the A5074, but parking is limited in this area.

Whitbarrow National Nature reserve is located between Kendal and Grange over
Sands in the Lake District.
Follow signs to the A590. Take the road signposted
to Witherslack. Drive through the village for a further 2km. Turn right at Witherslack
Hall into the reserve.
The nature reserve is about 4 miles south west
of Kendal.
听 There are buses from Kendal and Barrow.

pavements can be dangerous especially when wet and slippery. Also take care because
the cracks in the pavement can be hard to see due to vegetation cover. | | Opening
