The ground will be torn asunder, as pounding rhythms fall from the sky. All hail the Lords of Asgard, as their warriors descend from the riff filled land.

If one were to grasp one word to describe Comply or Die, it would possibly be "Abstract". Long, complicated song structures, sudden shifts in style, angular "melodies", and an overload of noise - it will never be filed under easy listening.

But whilst the band strive to tear their own music inside out, it doesn't always work, occasionally getting mired in a tuneless barrage of noise. Of course, shiny pop tunes aren't what the band are about, but a degree more focus and a sense of humour would go a long way for keeping an audience on board.

In complete contrast, Slomatics are a band in absolute control of what they're doing. Earth shatteringly heavy, their riffs are tight and precise, chugging along like behemoths. Amidst a maelstrom of noise, all manner of tones and frequencies intertwine, creating something crushingly loud, but frequently beautiful. There is definitely light at the centre of this heart of darkness, and it would be no stretch of the imagination to say that Slomatics are quite possibly one of the best bands in the country operating in this style. Long may they reign.

Tonight is also the launching pad for Electric Red's debut album, In This Machine. The four piece are greeted with a warm reception, and proceed to unleash an abrasive set of Helmet inspired riffs. It's fairly accomplished stuff, but suffers from a lack of originality and character. Ultimately, Electric Red are a solid heavy rock band, and once they manage to find their own identity and project themselves better, there is definitely room for more of this kind of thing.

But if originality is what you're after, The Continuous Battle of Order are tearing up the rulebook, and breaking down barriers. Flying in the face of conventional rock music, the two-piece exhibit a technical proficiency which is simply startling, a dizzying whirlwind of notes spiralling out in all directions, coupled to a tightly controlled rhythmic drive. It's precise, it's dazzling, and - crucially - it's utterly emotionally involving.

The bond between the two musicians is evident, as they shift gear upon a look or a gesture, and the sense of pure creativity streaming from everything they do is palpable. It's almost impossible not to be moved by the beautiful constructions they create, or the feeling of freedom they inspire. As the audience gather round the duo in a semi-circle, it's a communal experience, something that flows between band and audience alike.

Without any exaggeration, The Continuous Battle of Order are easily one of the most important bands this country has produced in a number of years. Breathing life into rock music and opening up new avenues, they truly are proof that the future is an unwritten book.
