Gig Review...
John, Shelly & The Creatures, Silhouette
It's Halloween afternoon, and ATL ventures down to the Black Box for some music amongst many tiny creatures, fairies, goblins, witches, and even a fireman! This, of course, is Pre-Teenage Kicks, A gig aimed at under-13s and their parents organised by the lovely people at Trans Fastival! While the kids run around, the parents have a great opportunity to relax and listen to some music on a lazy Sunday afternoon. So what of the music?

Silhouette, the musical creation of Shauna Tohill begin the afternoon. Perfectly theatrical, with a real sense of honesty and soul in her music, Shauna is flanked by Zarah Fleming on cello, Orla Rice on double bass and Peter McCauley on drums/percussion. Together they really bring across the passion and realism of Shauna's music.

Effortlessly endearing, the band have both kids and adults alike eating out of their hands. The unusual choice of instrumentation helps to create something special and makes sure it's not, "just another band playing just another gig". The single "Volume Destroyed" is brilliant in every way - catchy, with just the right amount of emotion, and destined to gain Silhouette some new fans.

Headliners of the afternoon are John, Shelly and the Creatures, a group of lads who are steadily growing into something special. 'Canada' is reminiscent of other great Irish artists such as Turn or The Frank and Walters. While 'Marley Street' sees Phil D'Alton take over lead vocal duties and switch to piano from guitar, a move which creates a delicate beauty in the set.

'Long May You Reign' is the definite highlight of the afternoon; instantly uplifting and with harmonies to die for, even the kids are dancing by this point. Penultimate song 'Blinded and Cross' is hypnotic and enchanting, and sums up why we love these guys.

On a sour note, John, Shelly and the Creatures announce that they are changing their name "for a laugh." More often than not, this signifies a new set and a new direction for a band. I really hope this is not the case here, as John, Shelly and the Creatures are not too far away from being heavyweights in the Irish scene.
