A wave's eye view of surfing
No greater challenge

Hang ten in Scarborough

Surfing has never been as popular in the UK as it is now! And the North Yorkshire coastline is well blessed with great surf beaches, as Lisa Woodruff reports.

Surfs up!

Over the last 15 years advances in wetsuit and board technology, better road networks and more surf schools springing up, have helped to turn surfing into a more mainstream sport.

Many of the UK's surfers live inland and nowhere near a beach, apart from those lucky few.

Travel on the M1 or A1 over a weekend and see the number of cars and vans heading towards Scarborough and the east coast with surfboards on the roof.

That's an indication of how popular surfing has become, especially in the North.

Where to surf in Yorkshire?

If you're a beginner then consider choosing the right beach. Do some research.

You don't want to go surfing where the rips are strong and you might get pounded into dog meat on the rocks or the reef bottom.

There are many good stretches of coastline in Yorkshire with gentle waves, easy enough for the beginner to try.

But before you even attempt to get in the water - book a surf lesson. There are plenty of good ones in the Scarborough area and on the east coast.
