Bedtime Stories book cover

The Best Bedtime Book?

We've been sorting out the cupboard under the stairs at 主播大秀 Radio York and we've found a box of Bedtime Story books. There are 100 books left and to make them extra special they've been signed by all the presenters. Find out how you can get a copy...

How do I get one?

To make the last books extra special, all the presenters at 主播大秀 Radio York have signed them, so we're hoping you'll be willing to make a generous donation to Children in Need in order to get your hands on one of the very last copies.

The books will be available on Children in Need day ONLY. That's Friday 14th November 2008. We ask you to make a minimum donation of 拢5, if you'd like to give a bit more, that's great.

主播大秀 Radio York reception and the phone-lines will be open from 7am to 5pm, so if you want to secure your copy make sure you're in the queue early.

If you can't get into 主播大秀 Radio York, don't worry, you can ring 01904 641351on Friday 14th November, we'll take your details and save you a book until we receive your cheque. Again, we're asking for a minimum donation of 拢5, but add on 75p to cover the cost of postage and packing.

How did the book come about?

As part of the 主播大秀's Reading and Writing campaign (RaW), 主播大秀 Radio York ran a Bedtime Stories Writing Competition. We were surprised and delighted with the reaction.

The winning story, The Best Bed, written by Esther Lilley, was chosen by best-selling author Gervase Phinn. But it wasn't an easy task - the standard of entries was incredibly high.

Impressed by the quality of the stories, 主播大秀 Radio York decided to produce a book of the shortlisted stories and sell it to raise money for Children In Need 2007. After all, it's a book for children, and as well as funding lots of brilliant projects both in the UK and abroad, Children in Need has also boosted projects closer to home.

To help 主播大秀 Radio York's Bedtime Stories Book, students on the Graphic Design course at York College did some fantastic illustrations. Local printer, Sessions of York kindly offered to publish the first 500 copies of the book free of charge.

We had 1000 copies printed, and spread the cost of the printing across every book meaning that for every book we sold, at least 拢4.55 went direct to Children in Need.

Thank you!

Finally, we should say a huge thank you to everyone involved in the making of the of the book - the authors, the illustrators, Gervase Phinn, and the very generous people at Sessions publishers in York.

And, of course, thank you to everyone who's bought a copy!

PS - We forgot to mention, the project was nominated for a Sony Award - the radio equivalent of the Oscars! So well done to everyone involved.

The illustrations for the 'Piggy's Tail' stood out the most for me, i thought they captured the story brilliantly and looked the most professional. Best thing about the book.

I'd say All Creatures Great And Small is a good read for children in bed.

all the storys were good but you should have shared who had won with other people. atleast a letter of some sort to say thank you for entering. (Moderator says: Sorry if you never received a letter - but we've been assured they were sent out - to every adult and every school that sent in an entry. And the results of the children's category will be announced in the May half term).

ella winfield
why dont you share the winning story on your website so everyone who missed it can read it, plus did any children come close to winning. (Moderator says: Good news - you can read and listen to the winning story on this website! Just click on the link to The Best Bed, on the page above. As for the children's category, we've been assured a winner will be aannounced in the May half term.)

The Snowman who couldn't stand the cold is fantastic and should have won!

Rhianna
Rainbow magic treasury.i like Them because they are fairy story books.

'Going Postal' By Terry Pratchett. I'm not sure who read it to me but like Ruth (see below) i like to listen to stories rather then read them it allows your imagination to flow more and listen to the words instead of reading them ... i have my ipod full of AudioBooks from Harry Potter To Terry Pratchett and books from Lemony!!

harry potter and the half blooded prince
because its so inspired and the ending came to quite a shoock 2 me i never thought it would be such a tragick end!

Ruth hardy
After taking a tip from one of Cliff Richard's books I found listening to a story helped with my depression and my insomnia. When I lived in creaky old castles and tudor houses it helped my over active imagination. I am currently listening to Ross Poldark by Winston Graham and also to 'Ladies of Letters.com' read by Patricia Routledge and Prunella Scales. I find it easier than having to hold a book and as 'Shadowlands' puts it I know I'm not alone.
