RADIO NORFOLK

主播大秀 Radio Norfolk's gardening contributor dies

Ray Loose, 主播大秀 Radio Norfolk's long-serving gardener, died yesterday morning (Tuesday 29 October) at the age of 81.

Ray joined the station when it began broadcasting in September 1980, answering listeners' gardening queries on regular radio phone-ins.

In more than 22 years of local radio broadcasting, Ray has answered thousands of gardening queries over the airwaves with Charles Henderson and more recently, Barry Gayton and Will Giles.

Over the years he became Norfolk's best known gardening expert, attending many gardening club events as well as his twice-weekly broadcasts.

Ray's home-grown recipe for eradicating moss in lawns is still despatched virtually every day from 主播大秀 Radio Norfolk's reception desk to eager listeners. He also opened up his own garden at Bawdeswell to the public to raise money for the local branch of the Red Cross.

Ray, born in Snettisham, joined the Royal Navy at 16 years of age and was shipwrecked three times during his war service. After leaving the Navy, and with housing in short supply, he and his wife Hazel decided to take a job with a house, and Ray became a gardener in Old Hunstanton.

He later went to work for the Gurney family, first at Keswick Old Hall and then Bawdeswell Hall as their head gardener.

主播大秀 Radio Norfolk's managing editor, David Clayton, paid tribute to Ray's gardening expertise on air this morning (Wednesday 30 October).

David said: "Thousands of Norfolk people have reason to be grateful to Ray for all his common sense advice over the years.

"He's been an important part of 主播大秀 Radio Norfolk's success and we'll miss his sense of fun, his friendship, his loyalty and above all his vast knowledge of all things horticultural.

"He loved his radio work and loved talking to our listeners. Such was his radio fame he was amazed once when his voice was recognised while on holiday in the Lake District."
