Directors of large companies "paid too much" and untrustworthy according to 主播大秀 Business Today poll

Two-thirds (66%) of people think directors of large companies in the UK cannot be trusted to tell the truth and 75% think they are paid too much, suggests a poll by Business Today on 主播大秀 News 24.

The reputation of business is on the agenda as business leaders gather today (Monday 25 November) at the Confederation of British Industry conference in Manchester and the survey suggests there is much to do to win back the trust of the public.

Only 17% of respondents surveyed agreed with the statement "Directors of large companies can be trusted to tell the truth", with younger respondents trusting directors more than older ones.

Older people were also more inclined to think directors were overpaid.

Forty-four per cent of people thought that companies could not be trusted to honour their pension commitments to employees.

Scepticism again increases among older respondents. Only 37% agreed with the statement "Accountants can be trusted to ensure that companies report their financial figures honestly".

Business Today, the daily business programme on News 24, will be broadcasting live from the CBI conference on Monday at 8.30pm.

Notes to Editors

Interviewing was conducted across 188 sampling points, face-to-face and in-home, using CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing).

Data have been weighted to the known profile of the British population.

The survey was conducted between 31 October and 4 November 2002.
