TV DRAMA

The Spooks are back in a sensational second series of 主播大秀 ONE's hit drama

"Terrific entertainment, and a quality drama at the high end of the mainstream." - Sunday Times

"The finest British thriller series in years." - Heat Magazine

"Great, compelling TV drama." - Observer

"Thoroughly gripping, superbly researched and one you'll get addicted to." - Daily Mirror

Natasha Little is to join the cast of the new series of Spooks with Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley Hawes, David Oyelowo, Peter Firth and Jenny Agutter all returning, it was announced today by Jane Tranter, Controller of Drama Commissioning.

Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and the team find themselves at the heart of the action in their quest to thwart the activities of terrorists operating within the UK.

They must battle with the dangerous and psychologically demanding aspects of their work, and the effect that it can have on their personal lives.

Gareth Neame, Head of Independent Drama Commissioning for the 主播大秀 said: "Spooks has emphasised the strong appeal of a series set in a world in which terrorism - and the threat of national security - is a constant reality.

"It is tremendously exciting that this groundbreaking show has been made by independent producer Kudos. It demonstrates the strong relationship that can exist between 主播大秀 Drama, and is evidence that British TV drama is stronger than ever."

The second series gets off to an explosive start, picking up at the exact moment that the first one finished.

Tom's girlfriend, Ellie, and her young daughter are trapped inside a securely sealed house in which a bomb is about to explode and there's no way out.

Jane Tranter said: "Spooks was such a big hit with viewers earlier this year that I am delighted to see it returning.

"With gripping storylines and an array of fantastic talent the new series is set to build on its popular and critical acclaim and complements other returning dramas such as Cutting It, Born and Bred and Waking the Dead."

Kudos' Head of Drama, Jane Featherstone, said: "We discovered with the first series that Spooks can tell stories no other long-running British TV drama can tell.

"There were times when we found our fiction blending imperceptibly with the news. Episode two, for example, was about race issues and at the time it was broadcast, the national news followed with a story about race riots.

"This new, longer series builds on that. Threats to national security have never been greater and our team of spies have to match the growing sophistication of an often unseen enemy.

"Spooks continues to demonstrate that what may seem at first unlikely can all too frequently become a reality."

Newcomer to the team is Sam (Shauna Macdonald, Late Night Shopping), who is keen to make a good impression and joins Zoe (Keeley Hawes) undercover in a surveillance operation to discover who is behind a nationwide bombing campaign.

Other new characters include intelligence analyst Ruth Evershed (Nicola Walker, Touching Evil) and Carlo (Enzo Cilenti) who takes a fancy to Zoe.

Also returning is Christine Dale of the CIA (Megan Dodds).

Future storylines include a visit by the US president, a war criminal on the run and the MI5 computers being hacked into.

The writers are series creator, David Wolstencroft, Howard Brenton, Matthew Graham, Simon Mirren, Ben Richards and Steve Bailie.

Natasha Little, who plays Dr Vicki Westbrook, is best known for her roles as Rachel in This Life and Becky Sharp in Andrew Davies' adaptation of Thackeray's Vanity Fair for 主播大秀 ONE.

Spooks is a Kudos production for 主播大秀 ONE and is currently filming in London and at Pinewood Studios for transmission next year.

The producer is Simon Crawford-Collins and the executive producers are Jane Featherstone (Head of Drama at Kudos) and Gareth Neame, Head of Independent Drama Commissioning for the 主播大秀.

The first series of Spooks will be available on video and DVD and a behind-the-scenes book will also be available from Contender next year.
