University Challenge Final 2002 - 2003

Age wins out as Birkbeck College, London and Cranfield University battle for the title of University Challenge Champions 2003.

From the 28 teams who qualified it's the two institutions catering for older students who have made it through to the final (Monday 31 March, 8.00pm, 主播大秀 TWO).

Both teams have performed impressively in the run up to the final and the match looks set to be closely fought.

Birkbeck won each of its first round matches by a clear margin each time, trouncing two Cambridge University teams - Emmanuel and Clare - before going on to beat University College London and Sheffield University.

In past matches, Birkbeck have demonstrated a cavalier approach and their habit of jumping in before the full question is asked has cost them in five point fines.

The Cranfield team must be addicted to adrenalin. Nothing else can explain the matches they played against Brasenose College, Oxford and Durham (first round and quarter final matches respectively) which were both won on tie break questions.

Their second round match against Manchester was also closely fought, with Cranfield only 15 points ahead at the gong.

They finally got the message that a large margin is a lot easier on the nerves and in the semi-final they beat Leeds with a commanding lead.

In the final match, the teams will tackle questions on subjects as diverse as leylines; Alice in Wonderland; particle physics; wonders of the modern world; classical composers; women and champagne; radioactive decay and polar explorers.

The trophy will be presented to the winning team by Benjamin Zephaniah, Rastafarian, author, recording artist and one of the UK's most distinctive poets.

Will quiz master Jeremy Paxman be on his best behaviour with these mature students? Or will he move the game on at its usual rapid pace, as he urges the teams, "Come on, come ON"?
