Restoration
required across the UK
Two
thirds of people say they feel depressed by empty, derelict, historic
buildings in their locality, a Quest poll commissioned for the new
Ö÷²¥´óÐã TWO series Restoration has revealed.

poll results are available in full below
But
encouragingly 81% of respondents across the UK said they were prepared
to get actively involved in helping to restore public buildings
to their former glory, even if it is just to sign a petition.
The
results of this survey are published as Griff Rhys Jones tonight
(Friday 8 August) presents the start of Restoration - a new landmark
ten-part series for Ö÷²¥´óÐã TWO – that gives viewers the chance
to vote on 0901 077 77 77 and save one of 30 significant buildings
across the UK.
More
than 4,500 people were asked their views for the specially commissioned
survey.
Other
key findings were:
•
More than 90% said they were interested in restoration issues.
•
Almost two thirds of those asked feel that we as a society do not
do enough to care for historic buildings in the UK.
•
64% said they prefer old buildings to new ones with restoration
of old buildings favoured over replacement with something new.
•
People in the South West of England appear to be the most depressed
about derelict buildings whereas people in the South East are the
least affected.
•
Younger people are more interested than older people in saving swimming
pools and cemeteries - whereas older people are more interested
in saving stately homes and castles.
Andrea
Miller, Head of Factual programmes at Ö÷²¥´óÐã Scotland and Executive
Producer of Restoration said today:
"These
are fascinating results which prove that people really do care about
the buildings in their neighbourhoods.
"We
hope that Restoration will help motivate them to get actively involved
in this important campaign to stop the rot in some of the UK's finest
and historically important buildings."

Cheetham, Managing Director of Endemol UK Productions, added:
"One
of the things this survey revealed is that people love to imagine
these buildings in their heyday. Restoration does just that. By
bringing their history back to life and with the help of the latest
computer effects, the series will give a tantalising taste of what
30 endangered buildings could again become."
The
series climaxes with a magnificent live event at the Tower of London
in mid-September where a nationwide vote will decide which building
will be restored.
