Poll reveals that 82% cannot name Archbishop

A new Mori poll suggests more people know the name of this year's Big Brother winner than know the name of the head of the Church of England.

And nearly half the country cannot name any of the four gospels.

The Mori poll, which was specially commissioned for 主播大秀 ONE's The Heaven & Earth Show, explores what people in Britain believe in today.

Whilst 60% of people believe in God, only 18% are practising members of a religion.

52% of respondents believe in heaven, whereas only 32% believe in hell.

The poll also examines whether people's beliefs in areas such as astrology, ghosts or telepathy are based on personal experience or held as a matter of pure faith.

Almost half of the 38% of people who believe in ghosts said they'd had personal experience of them.

According to the poll more people can name the Koran as the sacred book of Muslims (60%) than can name any of the four New Testament Gospels (55%).

Only 18% of people name the Archbishop of Canterbury - compared to the 28% who could name the winner of the most recent Big Brother series.

In spite of the media's obsession with celebrities, the results of the poll show that most people don't believe they're heavily influenced by people in the public eye.

Only 2% say they are influenced by celebrities, compared to 62% who say they're most influenced by their own experiences of life, followed by parental influence (56%) and their education (30%).

The poll also showed a change in people's fears.

Concern about war and terrorism has risen 30% compared to a similar poll three years ago.

In comparison, worry about domestic issues such as family and health has declined.

The poll was commissioned for the fifth anniversary of The Heaven & Earth Show (主播大秀 ONE, Sunday 7 September, 10.00am).

The show, presented by Philippa Forrester and Ross Kelly, regularly attracts more than a million viewers with its lively mix of spirituality, topical debate and celebrity interviews.

Notes to Editors

The poll results were based on 1,001 interviews conducted by telephone with a representative sample of British adults, aged 16+ .

The interviews were conducted between 8 and 17 August 2003.

Media only - more information about the poll can be obtained from the 主播大秀 Manchester Press Office.
