As many as
one in three 10-year-olds are worried about their weight - according
to a new survey of children and families undertaken for Radio Five Live.
The poll announced today (Monday 22 March) was commissioned to mark
the tenth anniversary of Five Live's launch.
听
It also reveals that nearly half of parents would send
their children to private school if they could afford it.
Five Live has marked its tenth anniversary by surveying children born
on the day the station started broadcasting, 28 March 1994.
听
The study - carried out by the polling company ICM
- found nearly a third were concerned about how much they weighed and
more than half of those questioned were worried their food wasn't healthy.
Nearly a fifth of all children born on the 28 March 1994 responded to
the poll (16%, or 261 out of 1,600) along with their parents, who were
also polled.
听
Nearly half of the parents said they would pay for private
schooling for their children if they could afford it.
听
But they also seemed confident their children enjoyed
life.
听
Every one of the parents said they thought their sons
and daughters would grow up to feel they had a happy childhood.
Five Live Controller Bob Shennan said: "The attitudes and opinions
of the Five Live Generation give a fascinating insight into the concerns
of 10-year-old children and their parents.

"It's been an amazing experience contacting and
working with so many of our listeners and its been a way to celebrate
Radio Five Live's 10 year anniversary that puts the listeners at the
heart of story."
Many of the Five Live generation children have appeared on air giving
their views about life and what it is like to be ten, while artwork
from 10-year-olds in dozens of schools has poured into the station and
features on the .
