Apathy, religion and spin top list of Midsummer Sins on Radio 4

Forget gluttony, envy and lust, there's a whole new bunch of deadly sins to reflect our modern age, according to a 主播大秀 Radio 4 poll for Midsummer Sins (Wednesday 1 September, 9.00am).

Over eight weeks, the presenter Joan Bakewell has been joined by an array of well-known figures to discuss the Seven Deadly Sins and their relevance today:

Vanessa Feltz talked about gluttony; Sam Roddick talked about lust; Beryl Bainbridge talked about sloth; Jonathan Aitken talked about pride.

But what should today's list of deadly sins include?

According to nearly 2,000 Radio 4 listeners, apathy is the eighth deadly sin of our age, followed by selfishness, hypocrisy, indifference, intolerance, ignorance, deceit and waste, cruelty and cynicism.

Religion, spin, 'celebrity-ism' and gossip all make the top 20.

More way-out suggestions for the sin of our times include: poor diction, noisy-leaf blowers, GOG-ism ('Grumpy Old Git-ism'), dropping litter and spitting.

Joan Bakewell comments: "I thought apathy would score highly right from the start.

"Incidentally there's something paradoxical about all these people getting steamed up about apathy! I think we're secretly guilty of it ourselves. Who hasn't said, 'Oh, who cares!' at some time."

The final Midsummer Sins programme, announcing the eighth deadly sin, will be broadcast on Radio 4, Wednesday 1 September at 9.00am (repeated at 9.30pm).
