The nominations have been announced for the 主播大秀 Radio 2 Folk Awards 2005.

Staged on Monday 14 February at The Brewery, London, the show will be compered by Radio 2 folk show host Mike Harding and 主播大秀 FOUR folk music presenter Mary Ann Kennedy.

Highlights of the night will be broadcast in a special two-hour show on Radio 2 on Wednesday 16 February starting at 8.00pm.

Television highlights will also be broadcast on 主播大秀 FOUR.

Scottish singer-songwriter Karine Polwart gets five nominations in four separate categories; veterans Oysterband have four nominations and legendary British folk singer Martin Carthy has three.

Since her nomination in last year's Horizon award, Edinburgh-based Karine has recorded a stunning debut album called Faultlines and picks up nominations for Best Album, Folk Singer of the Year, a second nomination in the Horizon award and two nominations for Best Original Song.

The 2005 awards confirm the progress of emerging talent from a vibrant and diverse folk music scene with Devon-based singer/songwriter Seth Lakeman shortlisted for Best Original Song (Kitty Jay) and for the second year running in the Horizon category.

Kirsty Magee, another Horizon contender last year, this year secures a slot in the Best Original Song for Coffee Coloured Strings.

Scottish fiddler Chris Stout makes the Best Traditional Track and Musician of the Year nominations following the release of his album First O' The Darkenin'.

John Spiers and Jon Boden are nominated for the second year running for Best Duo, which they won last year.

They also pick up two nominations for their spectacular 10-piece big band Bellowhead (Best Group and Best Live Act).

Martin Carthy and Dick Gaughan are both nominated for Folk Singer of the Year - Martin Carthy is also shortlisted for Best Traditional Track and Best Album.

The work of the veterans Oysterband, rewarded with a Good Tradition award last year for decades of service to the folk scene, again leaves them highly placed in the nominations.

Having spent much of the year on the road in their own right and as part of the Big Session project, which nurtures new talent in the ways of traditional music, Oysterband collect nominations for Best Traditional Track, Best Live Act, Best Group and Best Album.

Folk Awards show producer John Leonard says: "This year's awards - more than any other - reflect the stunning talent the folk scene embraces and recognises both senior figures and up and coming artists, all richly deserving of recognition beyond the boundaries of traditional music.

"I am particularly pleased at the number of nominations for Scottish artists as we have been saying for some time that there are some superbly gifted musicians and singers north of the border who do not often get the attention outside Scotland that their talent merits.

"The shortlists also focus on the great new acts that are coming through, like Karine Polwart, Seth Lakeman and Kirsty Magee and their wonderful music is making traditional music more accessible and bringing it to a wider audience than ever before."

The Radio 2 Folk Awards have honoured the best in folk, roots and acoustic music with an annual awards ceremony since 2000, celebrating the vibrant folk music scene and embracing a hugely diverse range of styles.

More than a hundred music industry professionals made up of broadcasters, agents, managers, promoters and journalists voted for the finalists.

Full details of the 2005 nominations, previous winners, the history of the Radio 2 Folk Awards and full information on Radio 2's folk and acoustic output are available on bbc.co.uk/radio2.

The Radio 2 Folk Awards are produced by Smooth Operations for Radio 2.
