A Lifeline for 20 years and counting...
Lifeline, the 主播大秀's monthly charity news and appeals television programme, is celebrating
its 20th anniversary on 15 October.
听
There have been almost 250 Lifeline appeals since the programme began which
have raised around 拢6m for charity.
听
From the first ever appeal for the National Star Centre for Disabled Youth in
1986, presented by Selina Scott, to Michael Palin's Farm Africa which raised 拢140,000 - the most successful overseas appeal - Lifeline has really made a
difference to millions of lives and raised the profile of hundreds of
charities.
听
This special programme looks back over the years at the show's most successful
appeals and talks to many of the celebrity presenters who have put their name
to Lifeline's appeals, including Charles Dance, Jeremy Irons, Gary Lineker,
Fiona Bruce, Simon Callow, Anita Dobson, Penelope Keith, Jon Snow, Maggie
Philbin and Gavin Campbell.
听
The programme also features an appeal presented by Monty Don for Thrive, a
national charity whose aim is to research, educate and promote the benefits of
gardening for those with a disability.
听
The appeal will include stories from some of the people Thrive has helped,
including James, aged 16, who had a very difficult time at school following a
spate of bullying and behavioural problems. He became suicidal.
听
Through
horticultural work, he has found a focus for his creativity and enthusiasm, and
been able to turn his life around.
听
Monty, who has first-hand experience of depression, is a passionate supporter
of the charity.
听
He says: "I have a personal interest in this because gardening
directly helped me recover from my mental illness.
听
"I began supporting Thrive
years ago because I've seen through their work the way it does and can help
people."
听
The programme also features examples of how charities have been turned around
as a result of Lifeline.
听
These include the story of Pauleen Obee from Harold
Wood in Essex who saw a Lifeline appeal on the Rainbow Trust in 1993 which
was presented by Anita Dobson.
听
It raised almost 拢25,000 to support families who
have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.
听
It also transformed the life of Pauleen who, moved by what she saw,
set up a charity shop in Essex so she could send all the proceeds to the
Rainbow Trust.
听
The shop opened in 1993 and continues to raise 拢36,000 each
year for the charity.
听
She now works tirelessly to raise the profile of the
Rainbow Trust and this year her charity shop efforts hit the 拢400,000 mark - a
remarkable achievement and all because of the 1993 Lifeline appeal.
听
The anniversary programme also sees the launch of a new format for Lifeline
with celebrities fronting the whole show.
听
