Ö÷²¥´óÐã South East triumphs at Kent Journalist of the Year Awards

Ö÷²¥´óÐã South East correspondent Richard Smith led the Ö÷²¥´óÐã's success at today's Shepherd Neame Kent Journalist of the Year Awards by picking up the top award.

Ìý

Richard, who received the award in recognition of his investigative assignments, also won Broadcast Journalist of the Year.

Ìý

Already a well-respected journalist with a substantial body of work, Richard's story highlighting the issues faced by prostitutes in the South East and exploring how women become involved was held up for special recognition.

Ìý

The judges felt the piece was particularly poignant as it set the stage for issues which were tragically played out with events in Suffolk late last year.

Ìý

Speaking after the awards Richard said: "When I received the first award I was surprised, but very pleased. Then when the Kent Journalist of the Year award was announced, well, I was completely delighted.

Ìý

"But I think it is important to recognise that both these awards are down to a real team effort, this work is not created by just one individual. It is also recognition of the investment, time and commitment Ö÷²¥´óÐã South East puts into producing original and investigative journalism."

Ìý

And the accolades for local television and radio journalists did not stop there.

Ìý

Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Kent's Ed Cook received a highly commended in the Broadcast Journalist category. And Helena Noifeld, Kent's CSV Action Desk Producer, also gained highly commended in Campaign of the Year.

Ìý

The judges made special reference to her creativity for the blood donor campaign – Bob's Blood.

Ìý

This year's awards attracted 105 entries – the most in the event's 19-year history. Richard, Ed and Helena were presented with their awards at a presentation lunch at the Shepherd Neame at the Court Street brewery in Faversham.

Ìý

Judges for the awards included Barbara Sturgeon, Kim Fletcher, Andy Bull, David Sapsted and Justin Allen.
