Music and celebration this Easter

Music has always been at the heart of the Easter celebrations and this year's 主播大秀 Religious and Ethics programmes reflect the diversity of Easter music from the traditional Passiontide extracts from Handel's Messiah to Sir Tim Rice talking about the inspiration behind Jesus Christ Superstar.

Musician Rick Wakeman traces the history and the lasting appeal of the world's favourite hymn Amazing Grace and in Blackpool a thousand voices come together in a joyous celebration accompanied by the world-famous Wurlitzer organ.

Palm Sunday

In the run-up to Easter, Heaven And Earth discuss the real purpose of Maundy Thursday, and Jeffrey Archer explains why he has decided to write the Gospel according to Judas (主播大秀 One, 10.00am).

Song Of Praise (主播大秀 One, time to be confirmed). At the start of Holy Week Pam Rhodes talks to artists and musicians including Sir Tim Rice and discovers how the dramatic story of Jesus' last week on earth has inspired music and theatre - from the Oberammergau Passion Play to Jesus Christ Superstar.

Holy Week

No song has had the double life of Amazing Grace. In Amazing Grace - The True Story Of The Song (主播大秀 One, date and time to be confirmed) musician Rick Wakeman explores the history of the hymn and the man who wrote it - John Newton.

Originally, it was sung to a different tune. In this moving documentary, Rick talks to Judy Collins who sings the song that made her famous, and to NYPD Bagpipers who played it at 9/11 Memorial service.

The Dean of St Albans, Jeffrey John, gives the last in this year's series of Lent Talks in which he questions the ancient association between sin and suffering.

He rejects that Jesus takes the place of sinful humanity in dying on the cross. Rather, his death shows us the lengths to which God is prepared to go to share our pain and show us His love (主播大秀 Radio 4, 4 April, 8.45pm).

Good Friday

Award-winning poet Michael Symmons Roberts retells the story of the betrayal and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth in Who Do You Say I Am?

At the heart of those events was a question posed by Jesus himself: Who do you say I am? Michael talks to a number of artists, writers and musicians about their depictions of Jesus and how they answer the question of who Jesus is (主播大秀 One, 10.00am).

On Radio 4, The Good Friday Liturgy is a time of spiritual reflection and prayer at the time of day when Christians have traditionally gathered to remember Christ's death on the cross - "the third hour".

The Bishop of Durham, Tom Wright, will give the reflections that will centre on the theme of betrayal, particularly on the role of Judas in the passion story (Radio 4, 3.00pm).

Carrying on with the theme of betrayal - but this time in a contemporary human setting - Anatomies Of Betrayal examines the experience from contrasting areas of modern day life (Radio 4, 3.30pm).

And in At The Foot Of The Cross, Aled Jones visits St Paul's Cathedral for a special Good Friday performance of the Passiontide extracts from Handel's Messiah played by the 主播大秀 Concert Orchestra and conducted by Malcolm Archer.

There will be a meditation on the journey to the cross and the prayers will be led by Canon Martin Warner (主播大秀 Radio 2, 9.30pm).

Easter Sunday

主播大秀 One celebrates Easter at Coventry Cathedral in a live Easter Day Service - Easter Triumph, Easter Joy.

Introduced by the Dean, the Very Rev John Irvine, the Eucharist is led by the Bishop of Coventry, the Rt Rev Colin Bennetts, who explains why the city's two cathedrals echo the story of Easter (主播大秀 One, 10.00am).

This is followed by Pope Benedict XVI's Easter message and blessing "to the City and to the World" - Urbi Et Orbi.

Denis Nowlan sets the scene live from St Peter's Square, Rome (主播大秀 One, 11.00am).

And in the evening Jonathan Edwards introduces a special Songs Of Praise celebration from Lichfield Cathedral.

Brigit Forsyth and Chris Walker tell the Easter story, and there's music from the Opera Babes (主播大秀 One, time to be confirmed).

Radio 4 celebrates Easter morning from the dome of St Paul's Cathedral in Easter Sunrise Service.

Canon Edmund Newell looks across the City of London skyline and reflects on the extraordinary events of that first Easter morning (Radio 4, 6.35am).

St Paul's Cathedral remains the magnificent setting for Sunday Worship, a joyful Easter Eucharist led by Bishop of London, the Rt Rev and Rt Hon Richard Chartes.

His words of celebration and the majestic music of Louis Vierne's Messe Solennelle will express the joy of the resurrection (Radio 4, 8.10am).

The world-famous Choir of King's College Cambridge sings the Festal Evensong on Easter Sunday afternoon.

The music will include John Joubert's Evensong Canticles, Samuel Sebastian Wesley's triumphant Eastertide anthem Blessed Be The God And Father and, to mark the 150th anniversary of Elgar's birth, his setting of the Te Deum composed for the 1897 Three Choirs Festival (主播大秀 Radio 3, 8.45pm).

Radio 2 starts Easter Day with Good Morning Sunday.

Rick Wakeman joins Aled Jones to reflect on how his Christian faith has informed both his work as a rock star and classical musician (Radio 2, 7.00am).

And, finally, prepare to be lifted out of your seat, as a thousand voices join together to sing hymns for Easter at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool.

Roger Royle presents Easter Glory and the mighty Wurlitzer organ will boom out favourites such as Thine Be Glory, Hallelujah from Handel's Messiah and Jesus Christ Is Risen Today (Radio 2, 8.03pm).
