Kirsty Young announced as new Crimewatch presenter

Broadcaster Kirsty Young is today announced as the new presenter of Crimewatch on 主播大秀 One. She will appear on the programme from January 2008.

On joining the Crimewatch team Kirsty says: "I'm delighted to be joining a programme with such a respected history. Sadly crime is a fact of life and affects us all.

"Being the presenter of a show which does so much to get justice for people affected by it will be a real privilege."

主播大秀 One Controller Peter Fincham says: "Kirsty is the perfect choice for Crimewatch and I am delighted she is joining the 主播大秀 One presenting team."

主播大秀 Commissioning Editor Ben Gale says: "Kirsty's journalistic background means she is highly experienced in dealing with live presenting, and the kind of difficult and emotive stories that feature in the programme.

"She has the combination of gravitas and warmth that Crimewatch viewers expect and we hope she will oversee many successful appeals."

Kirsty began her career in journalism on radio at 主播大秀 Scotland and has since presented for 主播大秀 Radio and Television, ITV and Five.

She currently presents Desert Island Discs on 主播大秀 Radio 4.

She is the fifth person to present Crimewatch which has been running for 23 years.

She takes over from current presenter Fiona Bruce who has presented the show for seven years.

Fiona will continue with her role on the 主播大秀 Ten O'clock news and is the new presenter of Antiques Roadshow on 主播大秀 One.

Peter Fincham says: "Fiona has done a fantastic job on Crimewatch over the past seven years and we are grateful for her considerable contribution."

Fiona Bruce says: "I decided to leave Crimewatch some months ago to move on to the Antiques Roadshow, which I am looking forward to enormously. I wish Kirsty and the Crimewatch team all the best for this new era of the programme. I'm proud to have been part of it for the past seven years."

Nick Ross, who left the programme earlier this year, had presented since the show it first started in 1984.

In its 23 year history Crimewatch has helped solve some of the most high profile cases, including the murder of Jamie Bulger, the kidnapping of Stephanie Slater, and the murders of Lynn and Megan Russell.

This month, the programme generated a huge response to the reconstruction of the shooting of 11-year-old Rhys Jones.

Overall one in five crimes featured on the programme is solved.
