Ö÷²¥´óÐã SSO and GOMA collaborate in media literacy project for young people

As part of the 10th annual Inspiration Arts Festival, two Glasgow primary schools, the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Scottish Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) have collaborated to produce Sound Stations – a major media literacy project for school children in Glasgow.

Fifty children from Broomhill and Whiteinch primary schools have worked alongside specialists from GOMA and the Ö÷²¥´óÐã – combining music, sculpture and video technology to create distinctive pieces of multimedia art.

Taking their inspiration from two sculptural installations within GOMA, music composed by the pupils will be available for members of the public to listen to on specially installed Sound Stations adjacent to the sculptures, along with short films made by the pupils which capture the story of the project.

Pupils from Broomhill and Whiteinch visited GOMA in September and selected two pieces of sculpture to use as inspiration for their compositions:

Martin Boyce's installation, 'Our Love Is Like The Earth, The Sun, The Trees And The Birth' and Christine Borland's 'After A True Story – Giant And Fairy Tales'.
Ìý
Music education specialist Karen McIver and musicians from the Ö÷²¥´óÐã SSO helped the children to express their own interpretation of these works, and provided sound for inclusion in the compositions.

Ö÷²¥´óÐã Interactive Editor Gill Davies instructed pupils in the use of digital video and stills cameras, giving each class a crash course in filming and interviewing. The resulting footage was edited into a series of short films and a photo gallery to accompany each composition.

Sound Stations will be launched at GOMA on Friday 26 October, and all the film footage and compositions will be available to see and hear until December.
