Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Leicester debates local eco-town |
Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Leicester is staging a debate on Tuesday (17 June) to discuss recent proposals for the development of an eco-town at Leicester Airport, near Stoughton, Leicestershire.

The Big Debate - Should Leicestershire Welcome The Development Of An Eco-town, chaired by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Leicester's Martin Ballard, features a panel of four local dignitaries, including representatives from the Co-operative Group and the CASCET Protest Group, who will discuss both sides of the argument relating to the current proposals.

In addition to the panel, representatives from a wide range of interested, associated and relevant organisations have been invited, including: East Midlands Development Agency; East Midlands Regional Assembly; Campaign for the Protection of Rural England; Accord Housing Agency; Federation of Small Businesses (Leicestershire) and British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA).

The eco-town proposal is to build between 15,000 and 20,000 new homes while ensuring environmental issues, such as energy and water conservation, waste reduction and limitation of carbon emissions, are factored into the construction.

The eco-town has drawn local opposition on a range of issues, including destruction of the countryside and the likely traffic increase that could be generated.

Highlights from the debate will feature on Wednesday's breakfast show on Radio Leicester and on Ö÷²¥´óÐã East Midlands Today.

A further live debate on the subject takes place the following morning (Wednesday 18 June) between 9am and noon, during the Mid-Morning Show with Tony Wadsworth. Clips from the previous evening's debate will also feature during the discussion.
