Phil & Kate's extraordinary 72-hour Three Peaks Challenge for Sport Relief

Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio 5 Live presenter Kate Silverton and the inspirational Iraq veteran honoured for his charitable work at the Sport Personality of the Year Award in December, Major Phil Packer, will take on the Three Peaks Challenge for Sport Relief this weekend, 4 to 7 March.

Kate and Phil will join forces to walk the Three Peaks – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon – in 72 hours.

Traditionally the climb is undertaken in 24 hours but Phil Packer suffered life-changing spinal injuries in Iraq in February 2008 and was told by doctors that he would not walk again.

Starting from Westminster today (Thursday 4 March), the team will drive to Ben Nevis in Scotland, on to Cumbria's Scafell Pike then to Snowdon in North Wales on Sunday.

To complete the team, Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Clive Woodward will fly in to walk the final mountain with Kate and Phil.

Kate will broadcast her 5 Live programme live from the foot of Snowdon on Sunday 7 March (9.30-11.00am) before setting out to complete the challenge.

The pair will climb each peak in a 24-hour period and drive to each throughout the night.

They will be joined by adventurer Al Humphreys, top climber Andy Kirkpatrick and Phil's close friend Martyn Bird.

Phil's three main challenges in 2009 included rowing the English Channel, walking the London Marathon over 14 days, and hauling himself up El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, California with a support team of some of the country's best climbers.

He has inspired millions and gained unexpected national recognition including Fundraiser of the Year at the Pride of Britain Awards and the Helen Rollason Award at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Sports Personality of the Year.

This will be his first challenge of 2010 as he gears up for his next marathon walk in April which will raise money for 26 different charities.
