Press Release

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It's an orchestra!

There's a host of Hollywood heroics at Glasgow City Halls on Sunday 19 December, when the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Scottish Symphony Orchestra raises the curtain on its annual concert of film favourites, Christmas At The Movies.

Revel in that huge Hollywood sound as the Ö÷²¥´óÐã SSO salutes some of the great heroes of the Silver Screen including Superman, Batman, Harry Potter and Gladiator as they stand shoulder to shoulder with real life heroes from The Battle Of Britain, Chariots Of Fire and Apollo 13.

Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Scotland's very own square-jawed matinée idol Jamie MacDougall presents this seasonal selection of classic film scores, which also includes Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, James Bond, The Incredibles, Indiana Jones and Robin Hood.

Top Hollywood composers of today including Danny Elfmann and Randy Newman are lined up with some of the biggest names from the Golden age of movie making including Eric Korngold, Max Steiner and the ever popular John Williams.

Now in its fourth year, Christmas At The Movies has become one of the most eagerly anticipated musical events in Glasgow's festive season, and to give all these heroic escapades the Hollywood treatment this year, the orchestra is under the swashbuckling baton of Stephen Bell.

A film music expert, Bell is a conductor well known to listeners of Radio 2's Friday Night Is Music Night, and has worked with an eclectic range of artists from Alfie Boe and Katie Melua to Dr Who and the Daleks, an experience that should help him keep the Ö÷²¥´óÐã SSO on its toes!

With mince pies and mulled wine on sale, City Halls will be decked out in glorious technicolor as the roof is well and truly raised by a host of Hollywood favourites for all the family.
