Special event opens with a poem written and read by poet and novelist Angus Peter Campbell

  • 07.30 Single blast of WW1 whistle, followed by piper, back to Good Morning Scotland

On the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 主播大秀 Radio Scotland and Brian Cox track the fortunes of the Scottish soldiers.

  • From 07:45 and on the quarter hour throughout the day, Brian Cox will narrate the story of what happens to the Scottish troops – glimpses from the battlefield that capture the unfolding narrative. Dramatic eyewitness accounts from the time – voiced by actors Simon Tait and James Rottger - and descendants today relating the accounts of what happened to their relatives on July 1st. on July 1st.

The event ends with a special feature Epitaph, where Cathy Macdonald explores why the day was so disastrous for the British – and why it remains significant for so many. Professor Sir Hew Strachan offers historical insight throughout the day and in this final feature. The feature includes a reading of a mother’s account of the loss of her son - one of the five soldiers of the 15th and 16th battalions Royal Scots whose lives are among those commemorated at the church of Old St Paul’s in Edinburgh.
