Glastonbury 2023: 5 things to watch on Friday

The most exciting weekend of the UK’s festival season is finally here!

The world-famous Glastonbury Festival kicks off today, with more than 200,000 festivalgoers ready to get stuck in to an unrivalled programme of live music.

If you’re not heading down to Worthy Farm yourself, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with a whole host of performances available on 主播大秀 iPlayer and 主播大秀 Sounds across the weekend. On 主播大秀 iPlayer, we will be livestreaming all five of Glastonbury’s major stages, and unlike those on the ground, you don’t have to worry about clashes, because you’ll be able to watch full sets back on demand for 30 days afterwards.

To help you navigate the abundance of artists on the line up, you can watch the Glastonbury Channel on iPlayer, live every day from midday, which will bring you the festival’s biggest moments live, as well as highlights and performances you might have missed.

Not sure what to watch? We’ve picked out 5 must-see acts for Friday…

1. Arctic Monkeys - Pyramid Stage, 22:30

There’s no doubt that there’s major excitement around Arctic Monkeys’ headline set on the Pyramid Stage. This summer’s performance will mark a decade since the last time the band took the coveted top slot back in 2013. It’s their third time headlining overall, their debut being in 2007, shortly after the release of their second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare.

They’ll perform this year’s set fresh from the success of their seventh record, The Car, which was released last year, and as a major milestone within their current world tour for the album. The band significantly reinvented their sound with their sixth album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, away from the indie bangers we all knew and loved and towards a more introspective, artful genre of rock, and The Car continues and develops this new direction.

But whatever era of AM is your favourite, we’re expecting to hear a range of hits from across their career - especially if their tour setlists are anything to go by.

2. Wizkid - Other Stage, 22:30

Headlining the Other Stage on Friday is Nigerian singer-songwriter and influential Afrobeats star Wizkid. He started making music at the age of 11, but his career really kicked off in 2009 when he signed his first record deal at 19 years old.

His international breakthrough moment was in 2016 when he featured on One Dance by Drake, which was undoubtedly the song of the summer that year - at one point it was the most streamed song on Spotify. The two artists had met the year before when Drake worked on a remix for Wizkid’s song Ojuelegba, but it was this second collaboration that put Wizkid on the map.

Since then he’s worked with a range of other major artists including Beyonce, Akon, H.E.R., and Justin Bieber, and he’s earned four Grammy nominations, including one for his album Made In Lagos and his single Essence. His latest album More Love, Less Ego came out in 2022, and his set at Glastonbury is highly anticipated.

3. Gabriels - West Holts, 17:30

Gabriels performed one of the standout sets of Glastonbury 2022 on the Park Stage, and it’s a delight to see them welcomed back to Worthy Farm. This time they’ll be performing on West Holts, alongside the likes of Louis Cole and Joey Bada$$.

This British-American trio formed in Los Angeles in 2016, and comprises of Jacob Lusk, Ryan Hope, and Ari Balouzian. They named the band after the street where Ryan Hope grew up, St Gabriels Avenue in Sunderland.

Jacob Lusk’s sublime vocals were well established before the band met - he appeared on American Idol in 2011, and sang backing vocals for Diana Ross. But he’s found his feet best as the frontman of this band, who started making waves in 2020 with the release of their debut EP. They have been going from strength to strength since then, with their debut album Angels & Queens Part I released last year.

This is sure to be their year: they were shortlisted for Radio 1’s Sound of 2023, and their second album, Angels & Queens Part II is due to be released on July 7, a few weeks after Glastonbury - so their set is bound to contain some new material.

4. Carly Rae Jepsen - Other Stage, 15:45

If the iconic 2012 pop hit Call Me Maybe isn’t reason enough for Carly Rae Jepsen’s set to be firmly on your must-watch list, then just trust us, it should be. The Canadian superstar exploded onto the pop scene with that track, which became the best-selling single of the year.

Believe it or not, her debut album Tug Of War leaned more towards folk music than the polished, slick pop music she became known for. But she established herself firmly in the pop world with 2012 album Kiss, and now boasts a huge back catalogue of bangers.

She’s been working pretty solidly ever since, having released six albums to date, and continuing to dominate the charts. Tom Hanks even starred in the music video for her track I Really Like You back in 2015!

But while she could be seen as a nostalgic listen for some, her latest album The Loneliest Time came out in October 2022, and the title track, featuring Rufus Wainwright, went viral as a TikTok audio, bringing in a whole generation of new fans.

5. Stefflon Don - Pyramid Stage, 14:45

It’s always interesting to see what artists are picked to play near the start of the Pyramid Stage each day, as it's a good indicator of who Glastonbury is expecting big things from. They didn’t disappoint with this booking - Stephanie Allen aka Stefflon Don is one of the UK’s most exciting female rappers. Her music is genre-defying, with influences in dancehall, grime, afrobeats and R&B to name a few.

She was born in Birmingham and raised in the Netherlands, and comes from a very talented family, as her brother is also a well known artist who records under the name Dutchavelli.

She’s best known for her 2017 single Hurtin’ Me, featuring French Montana, which broke through to the Top 10, and led to her winning MOBO and NME Awards.

Her last mixtape came out in 2018, and now, five years on, her highly anticipated debut album Island 54 is finally expected to come out this year.
