Take it easy with a ‘no mow’ lawn — this summer’s must-*not*-do!

31 May 2019

If you’ve experienced the envy associated with peeping over the fence at your next-door neighbour’s perfectly manicured lawn – why is theirs always so much greener? – there might now be a way to hold your head up high in eco-smugness.

A new gardening trend has emerged and been ratified by the gardening experts at Beechgrove: they stopped cutting their grass. After four weeks, not only was their lawn blossom looking beautiful, but it was also making a positive difference to the area’s bees.

It’s been four weeks since the grass was last cut and the meadow display is in bloom.

#SayNoMow is a recently minted hashtag across social media platforms, following Plantlife’s ‘Every Flower Counts’ campaign.

Europe’s largest conservation charity said, “Put quite simply, plants need pollinators and pollinators need plants. However, we know that both are in sharp decline.

“With 15 million gardens in Britain, our lawns have the potential to become major sources of nectar.”

Add this to the canny vegetable gardener’s “no dig method” and maybe even the laziest of us can not only become brilliant gardeners but help save the planet as well.
