Glastonbury 2023: 5 things to watch on Saturday

Welcome to day 2 at Worthy Farm!

We’ve already had one glorious day of the UK’s most exciting festival and we are so excited for more incredible musical moments.

There’s no need to feel left out of all the fun if you’re not at Worthy Farm yourself, because we're bringing the festival to you on Ö÷²¥´óÐã iPlayer and Ö÷²¥´óÐã Sounds. You can keep up to date with all the biggest sets from across the five stages as they’re happening live on iPlayer, plus you can catch up on any sets you missed afterwards. And you can watch the Glastonbury Channel on iPlayer from midday, which will guide you through all the unmissable performances that are due to come today.

Not sure what to watch? We’ve picked out 5 must-see acts for Saturday…

1. Guns N’ Roses - Pyramid Stage, 21:30

The Los Angeles rock band’s story has everything - wild success, rock n roll, a partial band break up, the emotional reunion. They’ve toured extensively over the last five years or so, to massive crowds, and are clearly still at the top of their musical game as performers.

The booking raised some eyebrows because the band hasn’t released any new music since their last album Chinese Democracy in 2008, and their best known tracks come from their debut album, which came out in 1987, but it can’t be denied that they are hard rock legends. They’ve never played the festival before, and now that they’re more than 35 years into their time as a band, it might be one of the last opportunities to hear them at Worthy Farm.

And when the opening riff of Sweet Child O’ Mine starts, there’s no doubt that the Pyramid Stage is going to be the place to be.

2. Lizzo - Pyramid Stage, 19:30

We could not be more ready for Lizzo to take to the Pyramid Stage. This Houston singer, rapper, songwriter, actor and flautist has taken the world by storm in the last few years, and deservedly so.

She first started releasing music in 2013, but it was her third album Cuz I Love You, released in 2019, that earned her the mainstream success that she still enjoys today. At the following Grammys in 2020, Lizzo received eight nominations, the most for any artist that year, and she won three of those categories including Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Her infectious, joyous, self-affirming music is just what you need at the mid-way point of a festival, and will be just what the audience needs to fill them with a much-needed energy boost (and probably a confidence boost too!). Lizzo doesn’t perform in the UK that often so make sure you catch what is sure to be one of the best sets of this year’s festival.

3. Jacob Collier - West Holts, 17:30

Jacob Collier is one of those people who can do everything, and he does it all incredibly well. He’s a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and best known for his genre-blending, accessible jazz music and his energetic live performances.

He’s classically trained: he was taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London and has performed in orchestras all over the world. When he took his Grade 8 in singing, he won a gold medal from ABRSM, the music exam board, for achieving the highest result in the country. And it was these skills that got him early attention when he started recording vocal arrangements of well known songs and uploading them to YouTube, catching the ear of Quincy Jones, who took him under his wing and spring-boarded his career.

And he’s continued to be a high achiever - he’s released four albums to date, and he is the first UK artist to receive a Grammy for each of his first four albums. He’s won a total of five Grammys out of seven nominations in his career so far, and he’s only 28 years old. He released the third volume of Djesse - a multi-volume album with more than 50 tracks and numerous well known collaborators - back in 2020, and the fourth and final instalment is being awaited with much anticipation from his fans and the music industry at large.

He’s certainly something special, and his Glastonbury set will be too.

4. Maggie Rogers - Other Stage, 17:15

Maggie Rogers is an artist who cannot fail to impress. She got the world’s attention while she was still at university, studying at New York’s Tisch School of the Arts, when she played her song Alaska for Pharrell Williams in a masterclass. He was blown away by the song, and a video of his reaction went viral, and in turn got her a lot of attention.

And Pharrell isn’t the only high-profile name who has been dazzled by Maggie. Brandi Carlisle and Sharon Van Etten have both become mentors to her, and she can count actors Florence Pugh and Zach Braff among her famous fans.

Her melodic alt-pop style feels masterful and mature, which makes sense because she has been making music from an early age. She played the harp as a child, and she wrote and self-recorded an album called The Echo when she was still in high school in Maryland. But since her breakthrough into the spotlight, she has recorded two studio albums, to great acclaim.

In May this year she confirmed that her third LP has been recorded and will be on its way soon, so we can cross our fingers that there might be a taste of some of her new music in this set.

5. Obongjayar - Park, 16:45

Obongjayar, real name Steven Umoh, is a rising singer and rapper based in London. He was raised in Nigeria, but he moved to the UK in his late teens and ended up going to university in Norwich.

He originally sang in an American accent, influenced by listening to the music of artists like Nelly, Usher, Snoop Dogg and Ciara in his childhood, but over time he started using his actual accent and created the sound he is so revered for today.

His soft, effortless vocals which slide easily between singing and rapping started to catch people’s attention. This led him to work with well known artists such as Danny Brown, and Little Simz, whose collaboration with Obongjayar, Point And Kill, became a standout track on her excellent record Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.

His debut album Some Nights I Dream Of Doors was released in May 2022 and set the tone for exciting things to come, so we’re expecting big things from Obongjayar - both at Worthy Farm and going forward.
