Julian Joseph talks to jazz composer and arranger Maria Schneider on the eve of an appearance at London's Barbican Centre with her award-winning New York big band the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. Born in Minnesota, Schneider moved to New York in 1985 and worked with celebrated jazz arranger Gil Evans during the last couple of years of his life. Evans's influence can be clearly heard in her band, which was formed in 1993 and has gone on to be one of the most famous large groups in jazz today.
