New Year's Day, 1966 was the last time Blackburn met Burnley in the top flight. Burnley have only visited Ewood Park three times in the last 30 years and have lost on each occasion, getting thumped 5-0 on their last league visit there in 2001.

In the day's other game, Manchester City visit Wigan Athletic. Mark Hughes' expensively acquired squad have begun the season in style, but City have a poor recent record at Wigan and have picked up just one point out of a possible 12 there in the Premier League era. The Latics have put four goals past City in two of the last four meetings at the DW Stadium, but had to rely on a controversial penalty to earn a 2-1 victory in the fixture last season.
