Transport commentator Christian Wolmar examines the case of the East Coast Mainline as it prepares for re-nationalisation. British Rail had its problems but the National Express pull-out is a private ownership disaster costing the taxpayer millions. Many believe the whole franchise system now needs to be overhauled if the same thing is not to happen again.

St Nicholas Hospice in Suffolk relies on volunteers to make it run smoothly, but just how many is quite incredible. There are five for every member of staff. We meet just a few of the 400 of them and find out why they do it and how they make a difference.
