Claire Martin talks to vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson at Ronnie Scott's in London and introduces a set from pianist Tom Gibbs and his New Generation Trio.

Bobby Hutcherson is one of the few jazz musicians who is comfortable in both free and straight ahead jazz. Born on the West Coast of America in the early 1940s, Hutcherson was soon exposed to jazz through family connections. After formal education, he played with local jazz musicians Les McCann, Charles Lloyd, Paul Bley, Scott LaFaro and Curtis Amy. During the 1990s and to the present day, Hutcherson has made fewer recordings, although he has kept up a steady touring schedule. Recently, he has been a member of the San Francisco Jazz Collective with fellow icons Brian Blade, Joshua Redman and Nicholas Peyton.
