1963

Episode 13 of 50

Introduced by Jeremy Vine. 1963 was the year of US president JFK's assassination, the great train robbery, the Mersey boom and That Was the Week That Was.

Radio 2's audio journey through five decades reaches 1963. Jeremy Vine introduces a collage of the music, news, people and programmes - as they were heard at the time - without any commentary, analysis, or hindsight.

The year opens with the big freeze and ends with the world mourning a young President shot dead in Dallas Texas. In between, Lord Beeching wields his axe on Britain's railways and it's the year of the Great Train Robbery. In music, there's a Mersey boom and chart domination for the new beat groups from Liverpool. And there's a revolution underway in television too, led by the young David Frost and That Was the Week That Was.
