You and Yours Best Local Food Retailer Long List

The attracted more than any other in the Radio 4’s Food and Farming Awards. This week our judges Simon Parkes & Arthur Potts-Dawson presented their long list to the judging panel.

The judges whittled the list down to 10 – an extraordinary feat considering there were over 900 nominations. A final shortlist of three is to be announced soon. After that judges will visit each of them.

Here are the 10 local retailers which made it onto the judges’ long list:

Beeches of Walkley, 290 South Road, Walkley, Sheffield, S6 3TE.

Established by Chris and Donna Beech to sell local produce, including traditional meats and deli items.


Cross Lanes Organic Farm Ltd, Cross Lanes, Barnard Castle, County Durham, DL12 9SL.

Established in 2005 by Peter and Sue Coverdale, selling organic food from an eco-friendly building and an emphasis on sustainability.


Earthy, 1-6 Canonmills Bridge, Canonmills, Edinburgh, EH3 5LF.

Dirk, Patricia and Pete grow and source the best seasonal food they can find and have created an oasis in the city.


Eurospar, Dolgellau Ffordd y Bala (Bala Road), Dolgellau, Gwynedd, LL40 2YF. Supermarket focusing on sourcing top quality produce from local suppliers as well as being able to offer leading brands and continental varieties.

A family run dairy farm which diversified to make and sell its own ice-cream to keep the farm viable.

Set up by sisters Lucy Jones and Victoria Amran, it delivers boxes of fresh, seasonal food from small producers to nearby homes, offices and holiday cottages.

Initiated by Transition Exeter after a public meeting where people decided to create a dynamic food hub in the city selling local food.


Ultracomida, 7 High Street, Narberth, Wales, SA67 7AR.
Based in West Wales they source foods from small, artisan producers in Spain for delicatessens and restaurants in the area.
