UK Children Going Hungry

What is it like to struggle to feed your family on a daily basis? New research by Action for Children indicates that a lot of families are finding it difficult to make ends meet and that an increasing number of children are going without regular meals. Jenni talks to Helen Donohoe, Director of Public Policy from Action for Children and a single mother who has to feed and clothe her three children on a budget of just £40 per week.

Malala Yousafzai

In today's readings from the blog of Malala Yousafzai, she records the experiences of her parents, her two younger brothers and herself as they travel away from their home in Mingora, the principal town in the Swat Valley in North West Pakistan, to visit friends in other parts of Pakistan.  The girls of a King Edward VI School, Handsworth in Birmingham, continue their reading from the blog as a gesture of solidarity.

Female Thinkers Who Shaped the Modern World

If you were asked to name some of the modern world’s greatest thinkers, who’d come to mind? It’s no surprise that Kant, Schopenhauer and Jean-Paul Sartre are amongst the fifty thinkers profiled in a new book by writer Stephen Trombley but only three women have been included in the fifty; Julia Kristeva, Simone de Beauvoir and Hannah Arendt. Why does their work qualify them for inclusion  amongst the great philosophers, scientists and social theorists of our time and who are the women whose work has been overlooked? Jenni is joined by the book’s author Stephen Trombley.

Fifty Thinkers Who Shaped the Modern World by Stephen Trombley is published by Atlantic Books. ISBN 9 781848 878235
