Series following midwives in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. An anxious Alexis has a caesarean section to deliver her long awaited baby.

In this first programme of the series we have access to Raigmore Hospital 's obstetric theatre, where Alexis's long awaited first baby is about to be born. Her husband Frazer stays by her side supporting her through the surgery and her mum paces the floor outside the theatre anxiously waiting for news In Resipole in Ardnamurchan, Sue and Andrew are also waiting the birth of their first child as midwife Alison Cook crosses the Corran Ferry for Sue's ante-natal check. Sue is well aware how far she is from the nearest hospital should she need urgent medical help and a lot of time is spent discussing her birth and which hospital Sue should deliver in. Meanwhile back in Raigmore, midwifery student Fiona Bowie finds it hard to believe she is almost finished the second year of her training. She is on placement in Raigmore's Special Care Baby Unit and marvels at the resilience of the tiny babies she is looking after.

We also drop in on Lesley MacLean's baby massage class and hear mums describing the benefits for themselves and their babies. One-day-old Dhruv though is certainly not enjoying getting checked over before a decision can be made to let him home but Cailean John is all ready to go home to Skye with his mum and dad, Nicola and Greg, but not before Nicola reveals how shouting 'wasabi' helped her cope with her labour pains!
