The Office of Fair Trading says payday loans are confusing, restrictive, and target desperate people. Are they a force for good, a necessary evil, or exploiting the poor?

The Office of Fair Trading wants payday lenders investigated because it says they're confusing, restrictive, and target desperate people.

The lenders say they provide a useful service and they're not expensive - if people use them properly.

We're in tough financial times, with many people struggling to make their money stretch through the week.

Are payday loans a safety net? Providing a lifeline between pay cheques, or benefits payments? Are they misunderstood? Even demonised

Or are lenders simply making money out of people who've run out of options - society's poorest, and most vulnerable?

Have you taken one out? How did it work out for you? Nicky Campbells takes your calls.
