Painkiller Addiction

America is in the middle of a painkiller addiction epidemic. Around 15,000 Americans are dying every year from prescription pill overdoses – triple the rate of a decade ago. The death toll exceeds that caused by heroin and cocaine combined. In the UK an estimated 1.5million people are addicted to prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Jenni Murray talsk to former prescription drug addict, Cathryn Kemp, Dr Cathy Stannard, a consultant in Pain Medicine at Bristol’s Frenchay Hospital and Nick Barton, Chief Executive of the charity .

Provocative Bra Fitting Service Images

Provocative images of scantily clad women are a familiar, if not necessarily welcome, sight on the top shelves in the newsagents. But are they what you expect to see on the walls of the department store John Lewis? Listener Claire O’Donnell was so taken aback by the picture promoting the store’s bra fitting service that she complained. She tells Jenni Murray why she isn’t satisfied with the store’s response.

What's In A Name?

How much of a part does our name play in our identity? Would a Helen feel any different if she was called Brenda? The fact that every year around 60,000 people change their name by deed poll suggests many people are unhappy with their original name. So can changing your name make us feel any different? Jenni Murray talks to psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman and author Wendy Perriam, who has recently changed her name by deed poll.

Ramadan Family

The holy month of Ramadan is in full swing at the moment. It ends on the 10th August. For Muslims it means fasting between sunrise and sunset. The rules apply to everyone apart from children, the ill or the elderly, but it’s a tough one  to stick to when the festival falls during the period when the days are at their longest and this year at their hottest. Catherine Carr took up an invitation to breakfast with a family from Harrow in London.

Jasmine Whitbread, Chief Exec of Save the Children International

Jasmine Whitbread, the chief executive of , left her highly paid job in the commercial sector to work in the voluntary sector where, she says, her yearly salary was less than her bonus. She is on the Woman’s Hour and tells the programme why she made the move and how she has raised the ambitions of one of the biggest charities in the country.
