Although Mozart's Serenade for winds with double bass was probably written to accompany a function of some kind, it far surpasses the nature of background music, and was called 'glorious and sublime' by Mozart's clarinettist friend, Anton Stadler. Shostakovich's penultimate symphony is conceived in a much darker vein, with death and retrospection the central theme of this unusual work for solo voices and srings, almost operatic in scope. Shostakovich regarded it as one of his greatest achievements.
