Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:

Ìý

Ìý

It might not surprise you to know that, from time to time, I have had my mug-shot above a story in the local paper.Ìý I have to hand it to the writers – usually my rather peculiar details are very accurately reported – though not long ago, a certain national paper, known for its occasional slip-ups, quoted me as Carol Ann Easter cos they didn’t know that women could be canons……!

Ìý

Ìý

But, while he’s welcome to print anything about me that he thinks might encourage or amuse his readers, our local Editor knows that to make any allusions whatsoever to the number of years I’ve been on this earth is to risk prosecution!! I absolutely hate the sort of reporting that starts ‘ 43 year old lawyer’ or 'Grandfather, 71', because I think that, except in certain rare circumstances, generally when they’re either under 12 or over 112, people’s ages are just totally irrelevant.

Ìý

Ìý

I've known people who were staid, over-careful and risk averse at 30 and others who are eager to try things out and don't care who's watching at 85 – but, as they say, life's tragedy is that most of us get wise too late.

Ìý

Ìý

I’m sad to think of the limitations we put on ourselves and the fears we struggle withÌý - so many of them imagined – when I'm sure that what God wants is for us to grow, to become more the wonderful creation God designed. All around there are family and friends to challenge and support and, up there, God and the whole company of Heaven is urging us on, on, into the unknown and unexplored, longing for us to take risks and step outside those self-imposed boundaries – stepping in front of the cameras like Matt or picking up a pen like Lily and writing songs.Ìý The chaps providing the music today are a good reminder – Embrace the unknown!

Ìý

Ìý

And when we do, we find out more about ourselves and God too.
