The Prison Radio Association

The aims to reduce reoffending using the power of radio. The multi award-winning charity launched and runs the world’s first and only national radio station for prisoners.

National Prison Radio’s programming is inspired, developed, produced and presented by prisoners working alongside professional radio producers. The station therefore delivers content that is meaningful to its audience.

Programming can challenge and motivate prisoners; helping them face up to what they have done to themselves, their families, their victims, and society as a whole. It provides vital information and support to help the audience turn their backs on crime, and rebuild their lives in preparation for release.

Prison radio offers an innovative way to draw educationally hard to reach prisoners back into the classroom. They are trained in radio production and play an integral part in ensuring programming is relevant and credible. As a result National Prison Radio reaches prisoners directly in their cells in a way that no other intervention can.

What the Prison Radio Association does works. National Prison Radio broadcasts to over 100 prisons – to more than 73,000 prisoners. 99% of those prisoners have heard of National Prison Radio with some 84% tuning in on a regular basis. 85% of listeners say they have heard something on National Prison Radio which has increased their awareness of support services in prison, while 69% claim to have heard something that’s made them think about making a positive change to their lives.

In a deliberate effort to reflect National Prison Radio’s diverse audience on-air, the PRA set up a radio project within Styal prison in Cheshire. This project, officially opened by Princess Anne, offers female prisoners an empowering voice and provides a vital source of information to women serving sentences across the prison estate.
