One of the most remarkable places I have visited is in Krakow, Poland. It鈥檚 the Isaac Synagogue on Isaac Street, built in 1664. So, who is this Isaac who deserved to have a synagogue and a street named after him?

听

听

Legend has it that Isaac Jakobovitz, a pious, poor Jew from Krakow, dreamed about treasure hidden near the famous Charles Bridge in Prague. The next day, he informed his wife and children that he was embarking on the arduous journey in search of it. On his arrival, he discovered that access to the bridge was blocked off by a garrison of soldiers. Desperately he confided in a senior officer, telling him about his dream and promising him half the booty if he would allow him to proceed.

The officer retorted, "Only a na茂ve fool would come so far just because of a dream! For several nights now I have been dreaming that in Kazimierz, the Jewish section of Krakow, there is hidden treasure under the oven in the home of a poor Jew called Isaac, son of Jacob. Do you think I would be so foolish to take my dreams seriously and go all the way to Krakow to this Isaac鈥檚 house? After all, every second Jew is called Isaac and every third is called Jacob!鈥�

Having heard this, Isaac immediately returned home. Much to the astonishment of his family, he took the oven apart and dug beneath it. There he found a great treasure. Isaac Jakobovitz used his new-found wealth to build a Synagogue on that site and to support poor citizens of Krakow.

During the Holocaust, the large Jewish community of Krakow was virtually destroyed. One of the few families to survive was the Jakobovitz family, who are amongst the leaders of the Jewish community there today.

Often we presume that success and happiness are but a distant dream. In reality, however, a life of meaning, fulfilment and joy is right under our noses, if only we realised what we already have. It can be found within our families and within our faith communities. Sometimes, we travel to the ends of the earth in search for meaning, looking for an answer. Often we have to make that journey to discover that the greatest treasures of life were back where we started. They were with us听all along.听
