A government survey suggests that car use in Scotland increased during 2013 over public transport, cycling or walking. Kaye Adams asks why people are using their cars more.
Kaye Adams asks: Why are we using our cars more than ever?
The recent Scottish Household Survey commissioned by the Scottish Government has suggested that in 2013 we have increased the use of our cars at the expense of cycling and walking. With nearly half of all journeys made in our car less than 3 miles. These figures suggest that the government campaign, 'not so far leave the car' launched in early 2013 has been ineffective in dissuading us from using our cars for even the smallest of journeys. The results show that two thirds of all journeys were made either in a car or van. Only one in ten journeys were made on public transport, the same number as by bike or walking. When commuting 6% of those who walked to work in 2012 now drive to work.
