Great Scottish Run

Dougie Vipond presents live coverage of the 2014 Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run.

Scotland's largest mass-participation sports event starts in the heart of Glasgow at George Square, where close to 25,000 runners pass through some of Glasgow's most famous attractions in both half-marathon and 10k races before reaching the finish at Glasgow Green, the city's oldest park on the banks of the Clyde.

2014 has been a momentous year for Scotland and, just two months after the Commonwealth Games were staged in Glasgow, Dougie will be joined by some of the stars of Glasgow 2014 to celebrate their achievements during the course of the programme.

But the main focus will be on the half-marathon race, featuring intriguing men's and women's elite races. Legendary distance runner Haile Gebrselassie returns for a second year, looking to improve on his course record time set on his debut in 2013. Joining Haile in the men's race are all three medallists from the Commonwealth Games marathon.

The women's field offers strong domestic interest from 2013's winner Susan Partridge, who finished sixth in the Commonwealth Games marathon in Glasgow. However, she faces three formidable opponents if she is to successfully defend her title. Kenyan Edna Kiplagat is the reigning marathon world champion, Ethiopia's Tiki Gelana is the reigning Olympic marathon champion and Caroline Kilel of Kenya won silver in the Commonwealth Games marathon in Glasgow. Partridge will hope the shorter half-marathon distance will favour her.

The half-marathon is as much about the masses as the elite runners, and this year a record number will take to the start line, with many raising money for causes close to them. We will hear some of those stories during the programme as well as bringing live updates from out on the course with David Currie based at the start and finish and Rhona McLeod reporting from Pollok Park, one of the most scenic parts of the course.

Commentary is by Andrew Cotter, Brendan Foster, and the former world marathon and half-marathon champion Paula Radcliffe.
