Gyles Brandreth

Famous faces recreate their childhood holidays. Len takes Gyles Brandreth back to Broadstairs in Kent to reminisce about his holiday in 1955.

In today's journey through time, Len Goodman takes presenter and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth back to Broadstairs in Kent to reminisce about his seaside holiday from 1955.

Len surprises Gyles by picking him up in a VW Beetle just like the one he travelled in back in 1955. The journey from west London to the seaside town of Broadstairs would have flown by with some of the games Gyles played. He and Len play them again to remind themselves just how much the journey was part of the holiday experience.

Gyles recalls his holiday job as a silver service waiter, and Len challenges him to show him how to do it. Gyles explains that his keen interest with Billy Bunter, and indeed writing, stems from his time reading in Broadstairs.

They visit the Pavilion on the Sands, where a holidaying Gyles used to dance the day away to the music of his hero, Cecil Barker. Finally, Len and Gyles sing on the beach with a Charles Dickens appreciation society.
